COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The goal of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to study and explore different scientific process. Students will recognize their connection to the environment and become motivated to participate in making educated decisions in our society as scientifically literate citizens. The Next Generation Sunshine State Standards will be implemented throughout this course and the Miami-Dade School District Pacing Guide for science will be followed.
CLASS RULES AND EXPECTATIONS
1. Behave properly and follow directions.
Be polite. Do not run, play, or throw objects in the classroom.
Unkind teasing and impolite behavior are unacceptable.
Follow directions the first time they are given.
If you are not sure what to do, ask the teacher.
2. Be on time and begin working.
Take out your composition notebook/pencil and begin the “Bellringer” assignment
immediately upon entering the classroom.
You will have 5-7 minutes to complete the “Bellringer.”
3. Work quietly and do not disturb others.
If you are working with a partner or in a group, keep your voices down as to not disturb others.
Listen when others are talking and raise your hand to be noticed or called on.
Please, no shouting if you have not been acknowledged.
4. Remain in your assigned seat.
Get teacher permission before getting up.
Do not walk around the room and do not get up to throw away papers. It is very distracting to
others, especially if the teacher is in the middle of a lesson. Wait until the end of class.
Ask for permission before going to the bathroom.
The teacher, NOT the bell, dismisses you. Remain seated and do not wait by the door.
5. Respect yourself and all around you!
Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
Take care of our classroom and school property.
Use polite speech and body language.
Respect yourself, respect the teacher, respect your classmates, respect everyone.

Must be kept at all times and some will have to be replenished if lost or used.
For Science Class: Shared With Other Classes:
2 Composition Notebooks (NOT spiral) 1 Pencil pouch
1 Folder with Pockets 1 Box of Coloring Pencils
1 Packet of Writing Paper 1 Highlighter (everyday)
1 Pack of Copy Paper 2 Pencils with erasers (everyday)
2 Rolls of Scotch Tape 2 Red pens (everyday)
Science Board (Selected Students ONLY)
CLASS FORMAT
Have your composition notebook with you at all times.
Science workbook could remain in classroom unless you need to complete an assignment in it.
Every assignment will be done in your composition notebook UNLESS directed otherwise.
Every assignment must have a heading and “Title” which will be provided.
Every worksheet must be headed properly. “No Name” will result in “No Grade”.
Every class will begin with a “Bellringer” activity which will be posted on the board or smartboard. The student is expected to work on the “Bellringer” quietly while teacher is greeting the class.
Expect quizzes on a regular basis, announced or unannounced, most likely after every lesson is completed.
Tests will be given at the end of each chapter.
We will use an interactive platform called “Gizmos” and will do at least 1 per week, sometimes 2.
We will do many labs and demonstrations throughout the school year. Safety Rules must be followed.
Students are expected to follow the guidelines on the “Lab Format” and adhere to the Lab Performance Evaluation Rubric.
Students are expected to check the board for announcements and assignments as soon as they enter the classroom. It is your responsibility to write down the Homework. The teacher might not remind you as it will already be written on the board. Not writing down the Homework doesn’t excuse you from not doing it. Again, it is your responsibility to read the board and write down your Homework.
The teacher also writes the topic, classwork, and workbook pages on the board. Read the board before asking “what are we learning about today?” or “what are we doing today?” or “what’s the page number?”
Absent students are expected to contact a classmate or contact teacher via email to keep up with class.
Make-up work is the absolute responsibility of the student and must be completed within the time frame assigned, usually 3 days. Talk to the teacher upon your return to school from an absence. You must ask for make-up work. A grade of ZERO will be awarded if it is not completed.
Cheating will result in a grade of ZERO, a parent phone call, and discipline action.
SCIENCE NOTEBOOK
1. Have two composition notebooks to be used for Science class exclusively. You will use 1 composition notebook for Quarters 1 and 2, and a second composition notebook for Quarters 3 and 4.
2. The first page of your notebook should be your syllabus. Highlight teacher’s email and website.
3. Make sure your notebook cover has your name, teacher, and period.
4. Write down your Gizmos’ username and password in your notebook.
5. Notebooks will be checked once per Nine Weeks. No loose papers allowed. Every paper must be taped.
ATTENDANCE & HOME LEARNING
Regular attendance is important in science class as it is difficult to make up lab activities. If a student misses a lab activity an alternative assignment may have to be assigned. EX: Current Event- 1 page summary. Each student is expected to do their Homework every night. It will usually take you 20 minutes to complete your Homework, sometimes less time. Remember to return to class with the Homework completed and ready to work each and every day. Homework will be checked regularly.
SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT
Every student is expected to do a Science Fair Project as part of the curriculum. This assignment will begin during the first marking period and will be due on the second quarter, around the last week of October. The grade on this project will have a heavy load on the final grade for the second grading period and may result in “F” if a project is not turned in. Check my website for ideas and pre-approved topics. Only those that are selected for the School Science Fair will be required to do a Science Board.
